USA Today called Sedona “the most beautiful place on earth.” It is gorgeous. It has been too hot for much hiking and monsoon rains have come daily which keep us close to the car.
That didn’t stop us from taking a 3 hour off-road jeep tour focusing on seeing the views from the top. It’s the bumpiest tour they offer, but we all thought it was well worth it.
Winslow is a perfect example of a fun day or two that only would take place on a road trip. It really is basking in the former glory of being a main stopover on Route 66. It was made famous by The Eagles in their song Take it Easy.
Put this on your bucket list for unique experiences. You can drive from Santa Fe to Albuquerque in about an hour on I-25 or take NM 14 and do it in an hour and a half. However, nobody does the NM 14 drive in just 90 minutes, because that is The Turquoise Trail, a National Scenic Byway.
Santa Fe (pop just over 85,000) is a special, unique, wonderful city unlike any other I have visited. Founded by the Spanish in the early 1600s, it is located in the Southern Rocky Mountains about 7,000 feet high. That makes it the highest and oldest capital in the U.S. It is the second oldest city in the country.

We had a fun several days in Colorado, the ninth state of this summer’s road trip. It seems like every place you turn, beauty smacks you right in the face.
Mount Rushmore was the entire reason that we included South Dakota in our road trip. It is more awesome, in person, than I ever imagined. Equally magnificent is Custer State Park, whose granite spires totally blew us away.
Spearfish Canyon is definitely scenic. The narrow 1,00-foot limestone walls, strong-flowing adjacent creek, countless trees, and three waterfalls make for quite a drive. And you will learn an interesting factoid.
