Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia; Cruise Day 108

Today we visited Petropavlovsk, Russia, the main city in the in the Kamchatka Peninsula.

It is located at the far Northeast corner of the Pacific Ocean. Brrrr, it’s cold here — about 35 today.

This is really remote. We are nine time zones east of Moscow. To put that in perspective, Moscow is 8 time zones east of New York City.

During the Cold War, the Russians used this area as target practice for their missiles.

Geographically, it has the highest concentration of volcanoes in the world, with 160 in the area (of which 29 are still active).
