Cairo and Giza, Egypt
We stayed at a brand new Four Seasons Hotel, with another beautiful Nile view from the room.
The hotel is right in downtown, near the burnt out Democratic Party Building, where Mubarak and his folks ran things. Tahrir Square, where the revolution took place, is also here.
This is the actual Tahrir Square. The photo is nothing, but it is where the revolution took place just months ago.
The Egyptian Museum in Cairo houses about 200,000 items.
The sheer magnitude of items and their detail is quite mind-boggling. It was much more meaningful being here after the sightseeing of the past three days.
The Giza Pyramids are simply awesome.
The biggest pyramid is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (and the only one that is still mainly intact). It was built 4,500 years ago, and was the world’s oldest manmade structure for 3,800 years.
The Giza Sphinx is a statue of a mythical creature with a lion’s body and human head.
It is the largest and oldest known monolith (made from one piece) statue in the world.
Also 4,500 years old, the Sphinx stands an impressive 66 feet (high), by 241 long, by 20 wide.
