Tolagnaro, Madagascar 2024
Madagascar, the world’s 4th largest island used to be part of Africa until about 180 million years ago. Because it is so isolated, it has many unique animal species.

Its population is over 30 million people and growing rapidly.
Madagascar is one of the poorest countries in the world. 81% of the population live at or below the poverty level of $2.15 a day. Poverty is ubiquitous here.

The mayor has a nice house.

The fertility rate is a huge 4 births per woman, and they start early.
Besides caring for their babies, the women seem to do most of the work.

We visited Nahampoana Natural Reserve to check out lemurs, a monkey-like primate. They are endemic to Madagascar where they evolved in isolation.

Coming home we traveled through the urban area of Fort-Dauphin.

We enjoyed the beautiful ocean outlook along the way.

April 26, 2024 at 6:47 amI enjoy reading about the journey. I envy your interest in learning. There is so much going on here, that I am drowning in “news chaos.” I wonder what the people in Madagascar think when they see groups of people coming through. Thinking of you and glad you are enjoying your travels. Chag Sameach.
