Eden, Australia, 2024

Eden, Australia is the only place in the world where whales worked alongside humans for mutual benefit.

In the 1860s, the whalers entered into a type of partnership agreement with the orcas under what came to be known as the “Law of the Tongue,” in which orcas would help the whalers find and catch larger baleen whales, in exchange for being fed their favorite parts – the lips and tongue.

Referred to as the Humpback Highway, Eden is one of the great whale watching places in Australia between May and November as they migrate to and from Antarctica.

Although our harbor tour was quite nice, being in March, we did not expect to, nor see, any whales.

Dogs are often used on these harbor tours as they are faster and better at spotting animal life than humans are.

The weather just couldn’t make up its mind today.

We caught a seal sunbathing by our ship.
