Antigua and Montserrat Volcano

Yesterday was my birthday. My stewardess made a Happy Birthday card from playing cards spread across the wall.

We chartered a helicopter, flew over beautiful Antigua, and then dashed-off to Montserrat to see its volcano.

In July 1995, Montserrat’s volcano (dormant for all of recorded history) erupted, and rendered the southern half of the island uninhabitable.

On June 25, 1997 another eruption killed 19 people. Now that area is off limits.

On February 11, this year, a lava dome sent a column of ash more than 30,000 feet into the air. It rained down on several nearby islands, closing some airports for a couple days.
