Milan, Italy
Milan is the main business center of Italy. As such it is not particularly beautiful.
They have plenty of deluxe hotels and, as usual, Travcoa put us up in one that probably was great 50 – 100 years ago. It was easy to see that it used to be elegant.
We did get to see Leonardo’s Last Supper, though, which made the day worthwhile. Even restored it is very faded. They only let about 20 people in at a time for humidity reasons. Besides other things, it is huge. It measures about 15’ x 30’.
Their cathedral is immense. It is the fourth largest church in the world. It has dozens of huge pillars that are unbelievably wide and must be 10 stories high. I cannot imagine how they made them and erected them so many years ago. That doesn’t even address the immense ceiling.
They gave us “whisperers” to use during the cathedral tour. They are slick one way walkie talkie type devices where the guide cam speaks quietly and her group, big or small, can all hear well. People can wander, sit, or do whatever they want.
They do have a beautiful shopping mall however. It kind of reminds me of the Queen Victoria Building in Sydney except that it is outside.
I’m tired of packing and unpacking and looking forward to a week of opulent peace on the Amalfi Coast.
